For the final day of my FOSW I decided another trip to the south coast was required. I would be going after as many winners as possible. Again to make the most of the FOSW a £3 advance ticket to Exeter was purchased and the FOSW became valid. A dud HST followed by an expected dud 159 and 158 got me Fratton.
From here I spent some time between Fratton and Portsmouth and Southsea. The aim was to get as many winners as possible. My bad luck with 444s continued despite a higher chance of a winner than a dud. After an hour I decided to get a drink from the Wetherspoons in Fratton so I could knock that one off.
Back to the trains and a few more moves before breaking for lunch. Two Wetherspoons (The Swan and Isambard Kingdom Brunel) near Portsmouth and Southsea station were visited with the later being the one I ate in. I decided during lunch I would take a quick trip across the harbour to Gosport to complete that one too! This required a train to Portsmouth Harbour.
Once done it was back to the trains. I got the gen that my penultimate SWT 158 was running the Lymington branch so it was off to Brockenhurst. I went via Eastleigh and spotted E6005 (73005) outside Eastleigh works.
Upon completion of the Lymington branch it was time to head home. There was some emergency engineering works at Sway and I ended up catching a train back to Southampton which was running 1 hour 47 late. I only just got Southampton on time for my train to Westbury. I didn't get off here however as I fell asleep and woke up too late. So onto Bristol Temple Meads for the XC to Plymouth. This left 30 mins late so not a good end to the day as I got back a lot later than planned.
It's the end of the FOSW. I only managed 5 full days but was still good value for money. Plenty of winners despite my dreaded luck with 444s (I even saw 444015 again but didn't ride it!). There is nothing major planned now until May when I have a weekend trip to London planned with my Dad and my next rail tour on Cornish and Devon Freight lines with Peter. I'm sure something will come up in April but it'll definitely be the quietest month of the year so far.
Moves made below and winners in red.

20th March 2011 - FOSW Day 4
Today would see us get back to Devon via FGW and their diverts so we would get a rare curve in between Yeovil Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction. The plan was also to visit 4 more Wetherspoons.
We did the first one in Southampton for Breakfast (The Giddy Bridge). A fill in move to Eastleigh before heading to Poole and waiting for the train to Dorchester South was completed before The Royal Oak was visited. Then off to Weymouth to do the two there (The Swan and The William Henry). We then did another fill in move to Moreton and back to Upwey before our required train to Castle Cary. We stayed on it to Bruton though as this gave us a connection back to Castle Cary and therefore less waiting time at the station.
From Castle Cary our FGW HST headed down the single line track to Yeovil Pen Mill before the rare curve up to Yeovil Junction. It was then onwards to Exeter St Davids before reversing to Plymouth.
Not a lot of miles today as the services were slow but a rare curve completed. 258 miles and 2 winning trains for haulage. I also had a not so surprising ride on 444015 again!

19th March 2011 - Heart of Wales Rambler. Pathfinder Tour.
Today was to be my first tour for the complete length. Starting at Eastleigh it was going to Llandrindod Wells and then back.
We caught the 0512 service off Southampton Central to Eastleigh and waited for our train. We had a message that the train doing the honours was 66006 about 10 mins before it turned up. Obviously a winner for haulage (I haven't had any DBS 66s yet) but also a winner for sight.
The route that the train would take too Llandrindod was via these main stations and junctions (in brackets).
Eastleigh - Southampton Central - Salisbury - Bath Spa - [Feeder Bridge Junction] - [Dr Days Bridge Junction] - Bristol Parkway - Gloucester - Cheltenham Spa - Birmingham New Street - [South Soho Junction] - [East Soho Junction] - [Perry Barr South Junction] - [Perry Barr North Junction] - Bescot -Wolverhampton - [Abbey Foregate Junction] - [English Bridge Junction] - Craven Arms - Llandrindod Wells.
This was 271 miles and the red bits were new route for me. Note the black dashes are bits that are not new. eg from Perry Barr North Junction to Bescot is not new but beyond Bescot to Wolverhampton is new.
A fourty minute waits was planned for Llandrindod Wells before continuing down the Heart of Wales line before swinging back round towards Cardiff and then back to Eastleigh.
The route was
Llandrindod Wells - [Hendy Junction] - [Grovesend Colliery Loop Junction] - [Flying Loop Junction] - Cardiff Central - Gloucester - Bristol Parkway - [Dr Days Bridge Junction] - [Feeder Bridge Junction] - Bath Spa - Salisbury - Southampton Central.
This was 272 miles. Again red is new route. We also passed Cardiff and Newport on the through roads. We got off at Southampton Central as the train was running about 20 minutes late.
I really enjoyed the tour. Very scenic and obviously a lot of new route and curves I would struggle to get under normal circumstances. I also saw several new shunters, 66s and a 59 en route.
Not train related but the day finished off with a visit to two Wetherspoons in Southampton (The Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis and The Standing Road).

18th March 2011 - FOSW Day 3 and Isle of Wight Day Ranger
On Saturday 19th March I was due to my first complete rail tour, 'The Heart of Wales Rambler' with Peter. It was off of Eastleigh at 0552 so i clearly needed to be in the area for the night. I managed to get a day off work and was going to spend the day on the south coast and stay the night. Not long after we booked the tour Peter had the idea of going over to the Isle of Wight to complete the Island Line as neither of us have done this. Whilst there we had also planned a visit to both Wetherspoons.
So I was on the 0553 off Plymouth to Exeter. It would seem we were lucky to get this train as shortly after it left Exeter to continue its journey to London it rolled back into Exeter! Anyway we waited for our train to Salisbury and once we got to Salisbury changed onto a FGW 158 to Portsmouth. We were going on the hovercraft to Ryde. We got to the Portsmouth area and had about an hour where we could bash as many units on the hill as possible between Fratton and Portsmouth Harbour.
We headed for the Hover port at about 1145. This is where it went a little wrong. Signs for the Hovercraft bus were non existant and we ended up taking a long way round to the right direction! We were clearly going to miss the hovercraft and to top it all off it was pouring with rain.
We decided to head back to the station and start again. On the way back we found the bus stop!!! The next bus was at 1300 (but i read the timetable wrong and thought it said every 30mins!). We then realised that we were right outside a Wetherspoons (The Trafalger) so we popped in for a pint! We were at the bus stop for 1230 (then i realised my mistake!) so we walked to the hover port (using the directions on the iphone now!). We got there in time for the next trip and they accepted our ticketes even though they were technically not valid.
Anyway we finally got to Ryde and re planned the day as we had an hour less. We decided lunch was the best thing to do first. So we headed to Newport on the bus which took 30mins. Quick lunch in the Wetherspoons (The William Coppin) and back to Ryde for the main reason we came to the Island! To complete the line and everything that was running on it we took a train to Brading, changed for the return to the Pier and then did the return to Shanklin. This completed both units running on the day and the whole line. This gave just enough time to get a pint in the final Wetherspoons in Ryde (S. Fowler and Co). Then back to the mainland. It's a pity we didn't have an extra hour on the line but we still completed everything despite our mishap.
Back over in Portsmouth we headed back to Southampton via Eastleigh. From here we checked into the hotel. We were going to go to two more Wetherspoons in southampton but we had seen that there were two 158s running the Romesy circuit that we each needed one of. So Peter planned a move to get at least two of the 3 that were on the circuit, hopefully ours. As it turned out we got mine and the other one, not Peters.
Then it was back to the hotel by 2330 and sleep for the next day!

At least 444025 hadn't turned up this time!!

15th March 2011 - New Route?
Well my plan today was to complete any route remaining on a FOSW area. This includes The Severn Beach Line from Clifton, Swindon to Cheltenham Spa and Cheltenham Spa to Great Malvern. So after trawling through the times of various trains and combinations of doing the route I decided on going to Great Malvern then Swindon and then Severn beach. I left on the usual 0925 off Plymouth and caught the train up to Bristol. Because there was a big gap until the train to Great Malvern I did a fill in move to Swindon and then made a move to Bristol Parkway. This gave me the connecting train to Great Malvern.
Upon arriving at Great Malvern earlier than expected a quick run to the other side enabled me to catch a Networker Turbo as far as Worcester Shrub Hill.
I then caught the train I got to Great Malvern back to Cheltenham before heading to Swindon on another bit of new route through Stonehouse, Stroud and Kemble.
All that was left now was the Severn Beach branch. Due to a a late running Swansea train i got off at Swindon and straight on another. I changed at Parkway to head to Temple Meads on a winning 158 where I could do the 1803 to Severn Beach. But when I arrived I saw another winning 158 on the adjacent platform. I jumped on it and quickly looked to see if I could get back to Stapleton Road for the Severn Beach. If all ran on time I would have (or if the bridge at Filton Abbey Road wasn't stupidly long) but I missed it by seconds! So I haven't completed the FOSW! I looked at my options and the next train was for Cardiff. So I headed there. I did a quick bash up the hill to see what was on the bay branch. It was a dud 153303 so I headed back down the hill. I got a phone call from the wife asking if I wanted picking up from Plymouth. The limit was 2300 so I said yes and headed home.
I have done the trickiest bit of the FOSW though and not only had I done this I also got some winning trains for haulage which I was not expecting. Finished my FGW 158s, a bonus 166 and a couple of power cars thrown in for good measure! I also spotted five new locos (66522 at Fairwater, 67021 at Worcester, 66953 at Stoke Gifford and 37059/37069 passing Bristol Parkway at speed sounding beautiful!) and a new unit (150002 also at Worcester).

9th March 20111 - Freedom of South West Day 1
Well my second FOSW of the year has been purchased so that I can get to Eastleigh on the 19th March for my first complete rail tour ever! I could have bought tickets direct but it's better value to get the FOSW and use it on other days!
Today I headed to Cardiff as my main port of call. They is still a fair number of units I still need in the area. Now that I have my new 2011 Locomotives and Coaching Stock book complete with on track machines, i have started to spot these too so kept my eye out at Fairwater and Barton Hill. A couple of snowploughs and a tamper was spotted.
A winning HST power car to Cardiff was caught from Parkway and then discovered the rear was a wining too. I needed to ensure i got it's return working. Whilst waiting for this i decided to do a spot of bashing up and down the hill. My initial plan was to just wait until i saw something i needed hop on and then pop back down using the same method at Queen Street. I was waiting a while and got nowhere. So i went up anyway to see what was on the bay branch. It was a winning 153 unit but i didn't nab it yet. I headed back to Central for 43140!
All of a sudden required 66s for sight started appearing! In the space of an hour i saw 3 new ones. My return to Cardiff gained a winning 170 unit for sight and haulage.
It was time for the hill again and get the bay branch unit. I headed up the hill and spotted a winner heading back down so jumped on. Then back up for the 153. That completed and my descent grabbed another 142. The last for ATW.
I had grabbed two winners off the hill and didn't want to push my luck! So i went back for the CDF - NWP move! I did this several times to get in place for the WAG Express which was to be my final ATW 57! Unlike last time when 57315 was supposed to be on, this time it was! During all of this i spotted 43002 on the rear of a service heading to Swansea. I needed this so another couple of NWP to CDF moves were completed until its return back and then off to Swindon. A quick (30 mins from off the train and back onto another!) Chilli in a required Wetherspoons and a time for home! Got to Temple Meads a couple of minutes early enabling me to run and grab the dud voyager back to Plymouth.
A very good day with 13 winners and 526 miles completed. Also spotted GBRail Frieght 66 at Newport as i was leaving which was required for sight!

2nd March 2011 - Devon Day Ranger
Another Devon Day Ranger before I do another Freedom of the South West. The was nothing major planned and I was meeting Peter off the usual 0925 off Plymouth (winner for haulage) at Newton Abbot. He very quickly got news that there was an East Coast Power Car on the 1V50. This was a must catch train! Not only was an EC power very rare I was also one of the 6 remaining I need for sight! Big bonus!
The other highlights of the day was another Voyager for haulage and sighting 31285 at Exeter as this was one of the few 31s I need for sight.
A good day and managed a very good 317 miles off a Devon Ranger!
