Today was a bonus trip. I was with friends and we went to Monkey World in Wool, Dorset. We got there on the train from Pokesdown, Bournemouth. A total of 39 miles and managed to go on four Class 444s due to the splitting and joining at Bournemouth. However to my utter dismay only one winner! Of 45 Class 444s, I have been on 13 of them so only one winner was dissapointing.
Winner in red!

22nd February 2011 - Devon Day Ranger
The surprise today was that the DRS move from yesteday was returning. This was early so I headed on the normal service from Plymouth to Newton Abbot to chnage for Dawlish. Another few good photos were got and then the rest of the day was to be HST bashing to get the FGW power cars.
This didn't exactly happen. In our attempt to get back off the local stopping services we had to use units and then ended up on XC HSTs. Then I saw my final 159 required for haulage so that move was made.
It was my only winner of the day but a big one. I no longer need to worry about the Class 159 units.

21st February - Devon Day Ranger
One of the main things for today was to photogrpah the DRS stock move from Crewe to Keyham, Plymouth. I would meet Peter at some point to do this and we decided Aller near Newton Abbot West Junction would be a good spot. I have never photographed anything from this location before so it was new to me.
Not knowing the exact timings of everything I went out at the normal time and i'm glad i did. Before I meet Peter I managed a 3 winning trains for haulage. A new Voyager and two more FGW power cars.
It was raining for the photo of the DRS 47 and 57 but i was pleased with it DRS 47 & 57

13 - 19th Februay 2011 - Holiday to the North West of England
Freedom of the North West Rover
Me and my wife both had a weeks holiday and somehow she agreed that we would go to the North West of England by train and use a Freedom of the North West. This blog will not include the exact details of the trains I caught (partly because I haven't worked out head codes yet and will take longer to write).
13th February
This was not the start of the Rover but to get in a place where the 7 Day ticket would kick in we went via London Waterloo and London King's Cross. Partly because it was cheaper and partly to see my sister. So today would only see us get as far as London via the West of England Main line. A route that I had only ever done in bits and not the section between Salisbury and Basingstoke. The bonus was that we set off from Plymouth on a train and not a coach like I was told when I bought the tickets! The problem was the train we intended to catch was cancelled due to a car on the line at Totnes. So we had a 50 minute wait for the next one and single line operation kicked in at Totnes. Where the car was, was down a very steep embankment.
We eventually got to Exeter and it was a straight forward journey to London Waterloo. A quick top up of our oyster cards and then a short journey to Earlsfield for my sisters.
14th February - Day 1
Our Rovers were going to be valid from Leeds. So we had the joy of Morning Rush hour as we tackled the journey across London via Earlsfield - London Waterloo - Northern Line and Victoria line - King's Cross. We got there with plenty of time so we had breakfast and then I had a wonder around. I'm not impressed with Barriers being put up at King's cross by I do understand why. A few more duff East Coast power cars and Thunderbird. I did see a winning 91 for sight as we left behind a winning 91 for haulage. Onwards to Leeds.
On the way managed a few 66s for sight with GBRail Freight being big winners but both 67s I saw were dud. We got to Leeds bang on time and this is now the start of the Rover.
We started our journey to Carlisle by heading to Manchester on a Transpennine Express. I really like the 185 Dmu. Comfortable and reasonably fast. Got the thumbs up from my wife too! At Manchester it was time for lunch. So the first visit to a Whetherspoons for the holiday! The Manchester and County. We then continued our journey. We headed to Preston on a Northern 156 and from Preston a Pendolino. This was the first and only time I was not happy in the whole holiday. We had no where got the luggage and no window. I appreciate what the Pendolinos have done for the West Coast Mainline and in general I like them but not in the non window seats. Design flaw having such small windows. There was nothing much else to report as I couldn't see and once we arrived at Carlisle we headed to the hotel. Before we move on to the next day I should just mention we did both Wetherspoons in Carlisle either side of a nice meal in Frankies and Bennys.
15th February Day 2
Today would see us go to Chester. A straight forward trip down to Warrington Bank Quay and then across to Chester. We got decent seats in the Pendolino and could see everything! From Warrington to Chester I nabbed my final 175 for sight. We spent a good 5 hours in Chester where we walked around the City Wall and went to the museum. We also visited both Wetherspoons.
From Chester we headed back towards Manchester. The objective was to visit the Stalybridge station pub. A change at Piccadilly was required for this at the height if rush hour but there were no probs. After a quicker than expected drink we went back to Manchester via Victoria so we could get something to eat. We went to the Seven Stars Wetherspoons but it turns out this was not a new one. After five minutes if being in there We realised we had in fact been to it a few years before ahead of a Muse gig! Ah well! It is a nice pub! After dinner we headed back to Carlisle from Victoria and again changing at Preston.
16th February - Day 3
Today was going to be low mileage. We were only going to Lake Windermere. We ended up taking a weird way to get there so we didn't end up waiting around at Oxenholme. We headed to Lancaster, back up to Oxenholme and then into Windermere. The weather was stunning and the lake was fantastic. After this we headed back to Lancaster where we then decided to head to Morecambe for dinner. Before that however we had time to quickly get a drink in one of the Wetherspoons in Lancaster. After our dinner in Morecambe we headed back to Carlisle.
17th February - Day 4
Today we were going to go to Blackpool. Neither of us had been before. We didn't take the direct route though as I wanted to go down the Cumbrian Coast line. This wasn't as straight forward as planned as the train was terminated at Workington due to no train crew. We had an hour so we went to a bonus Wetherspoons. Then onwards to Barrow-in-Furness. Upon passing Sellafield i manged to spot two new 57s. When we arrived at Barrow we bought lunch to eat on the train to Preston but did grab a quick drink at the Wetherspoons.
The next highlight on the way to Preston was Carnforth. Another two 57s for sight and a string of 20s, 37s, 47s and a 33. The 33 was winning as was one 37. From Preston we headed to Blackpool North. Here I saw 950001 and got a decent photo! Last one I got was in fading light and it was moving at speed so wasn't that great!
Blackpool beach was a lot nicer than I expected. There was no one around as it was obviously not the season. The worst thing was all the roadworks. The tram tracks were being relaid and the tower was covered in scaffolding! We had a drink in the Wetherspoons near the North pier before a walk to the south pier and pleasure beach. Nothing was open as expected but the light was just fading and some good photos were got. We then went to the second Wetherpsoons for Curry night! Then back home from Blackpool South. A very poor station compared to North and very obviously used less!
18th February - Day 5
For the first few hours today I went ahead if my wife. Two reasons. she wanted to look at shops in Carlisle and I wants to get some extra route in around Manchester area. Ultimately we would meet up in Liverpool. I headed down to Warrington Bank Quay. I then headed to Huyton to get one of the curves in at Earlestown. Then back to Manchester Victoria to get the other curve in (did third when we did Chester to Manchester P) and the link up to Victoria. I then headed back to Piccadilly via Salford Crescent before heading to Liverpool. During the course of this route completing I saw newly painted 60011! Shame I got no photo but trains these days don't help!
In Liverpool we headed to the Docks and went to the Maritime Museum which was very good. We went to 3 more Whetherspoons. Two for drinks and one for dinner.
19th February - Day 6
Last day. Seeing as though it was Saturday and there are no restrictions on Rovers I made the most of it. Our journey back home was to be via London again on the same route we came up on. We had to be off to Leeds on the 0925. So I had time to take a trip to Dumfries which is the most northern I could get on the rover. It was dark on the way up but starting to lighten on the return. This was all planned so I could see what was at Kingmoor. There were a few DBS 66s, DRS 66s and 37s and Colas Rail 66s. There was plenty more but I couldn't see quick enough!
The first leg of our journey was over the famous Settle and Carlisle line. We had the bonus of a nightime snow fall adding to the already spectacular view. It was still snowing as we passed over and got to Leeds. The journey back to Kings cross was a dud 91 which I was not happy about. However there was a bounty of 66s at Peterborough and Doncaster. I missed some though as I wasn't paying attention! doh!
The rest of the journey was uneventful with the exception of a spotting of Colas Rail 66845 at Woking! Before the start of the day I hadn't seen any 66/8s and after my Kingmoor spots and this I had seen 4!
Overview
I had a great holiday and although it was definitely geared towards me with all travel by train my wife enjoyed it too. It may be a while before we do another rover (would love to do Freedom of Scotland).
My one complaint (not that you can really as I guess it is luck of the draw!!!!!) was the number of duds I got for haulage. The number of Class 91s I had been hauled by before the trip, was one. I ended up behind it again! Of 52 Pendolinos (53 if you're picky!), I had been on 7. I ended up on 3 of them again! I had a repeat haulage on a 175 but I half expected that because I have done a fair few in South Wales. So in that respect I felt unlucky!
I managed loads of new route whilst using the FONW. It was all new except Leeds - Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Piccadilly - Liverpool via Eccles and a tiny bit between Carlisle and the junction to Dumfries! So my top 3 journeys:
3. Cumbrian Coast - Beautiful. I am used to the Dawlish Sea Wall so I prefered this as it was different. Not as fast though!
2. Carlisle - Lancaster - Wow! Loved speeding through this area on the Voyagers and Pendolinos. I did like the tilting of these trains!
1. Carlisle - Settle - Not exactly a surprise I guess but this was by far the best. Up there with Fort William - Mailag. The snowfall was an added bonus! Shame I couldn't get photos of the train in the scenery!
During the week I managed 2,283 miles. Not bad considering a fair amount of time was spent actually visiting places! Year total now stands at 6,926. I am already well over a third of the way of my total for last year! Next big thing planned is my first proper rail tour in March.

11th February 2011 - Devon Day Ranger
Well i finally made it out for the first time in February and was a day of two halves!
I was meeting Peter at Newton Abbot but his plans changed and he went off to London so he left me on my own. The plan was to eventually see 67030 with a Private Charter from Bodmin to Trowbridge but it went wrong. So while i was on my way to Dawlish the gen was it was 3 early at Totnes. That was fine as i was nearly at Newton Abbot and would be ahead of it.
Well there was some duff gen about as I was in position and waiting and then gen came through that it was at Exeter 19 early. I was not happy. Wasted time for nothing.
The positives for the day was i managed 4 winners which was remarkable! Managed 267 miles.
Next on agenda is my holiday to the North West which will be using a Freedom of the North West.

30 January 2011 - Cheeky trip to Penzance!
I had one day left on my FOSW so i went down to Penzance on the Sunday for a couple of hours with my wife for dinner. We then came back on the sleeper. No winners but was a nice evening out.
